প্রিয় শিক্ষার্থীরা,

আমাদের ৩০ অধ্যায়ের English Grammar শেখার যাত্রা এবার আরও এক ধাপ এগিয়ে গেল।

আগের অধ্যায়ে আমরা Conjunction ও Interjection সম্পর্কে শিখেছি। আজ আমরা এমন একটি বিষয় শিখব, যেটি ইংরেজিতে প্রায় প্রতিটি বাক্যেই কোনো না কোনোভাবে দেখা যায়—

Articles

ইংরেজিতে প্রধান Article হলো:

A, An, The

এই তিনটি ছোট Word হলেও সঠিক English লেখার ক্ষেত্রে এদের গুরুত্ব অনেক।

এর পাশাপাশি আজ আমরা Determiner সম্পর্কেও প্রাথমিক ধারণা তৈরি করব।

PART – A

🅰️ ARTICLE কী?

১. Article-এর সংজ্ঞা

An Article is a word used before a noun to indicate whether we are talking about something in a general or specific way.

সহজ বাংলায়:

Noun-এর আগে ব্যবহৃত এমন Word, যা সেই Noun সম্পর্কে সাধারণ বা নির্দিষ্ট ধারণা প্রকাশ করতে সাহায্য করে, তাকে Article বলে।

ইংরেজিতে তিনটি Article রয়েছে:

A

AN

THE

২. Article-এর প্রধান দুই ধরনের ভাগ

Articles প্রধানত দুই ধরনের:

১. Indefinite Articles

A, An

২. Definite Article

The

৩. A এবং AN কেন Indefinite?

A এবং An সাধারণত কোনো একটি ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে নির্দিষ্টভাবে না বুঝিয়ে সাধারণভাবে বোঝায়।

Example:

I saw a dog.

এখানে আমি কোনো নির্দিষ্ট Dog-এর কথা বলছি না। একটি কুকুর দেখেছি।

আর:

I saw the dog.

এখানে একটি নির্দিষ্ট কুকুরের কথা বোঝানো হচ্ছে।

PART – B

🅰️ ARTICLE “A”

৪. A-এর ব্যবহার

A সাধারণত একবচন Countable Noun-এর আগে ব্যবহৃত হয়, যখন পরের শব্দটি consonant sound দিয়ে শুরু হয়।

Example:

a boy

a girl

a book

a pen

a teacher

a car

a university

শেষের উদাহরণটি খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

university দেখতে vowel letter U দিয়ে শুরু হলেও এর উচ্চারণ শুরু হয় /juː/ sound দিয়ে, যা consonant sound-এর মতো শুরু হয়।

তাই:

✅ a university

❌ an university

৫. A-এর সহজ Formula

A + Singular Countable Noun + Consonant Sound

Example:

a book

a pen

a cat

a student

a teacher

৬. A দিয়ে বাক্য

I have a book.

She is a teacher.

He bought a car.

Rahul has a bicycle.

I saw a bird.

PART – C

🅰️ “AN”

৭. AN-এর ব্যবহার

An সাধারণত একবচন Countable Noun-এর আগে ব্যবহৃত হয়, যখন পরের শব্দটি vowel sound দিয়ে শুরু হয়।

সাধারণ vowel letters হলো:

A, E, I, O, U

কিন্তু মনে রাখবে:

Article ব্যবহারের ক্ষেত্রে শুধু Letter নয়, Sound গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

৮. AN-এর উদাহরণ

an apple

an egg

an orange

an umbrella

an elephant

an idea

৯. AN দিয়ে বাক্য

I ate an apple.

She has an umbrella.

He is an honest man.

I saw an elephant.

It was an interesting story.

১০. Honest-এর আগে AN কেন?

honest শব্দটি H দিয়ে লেখা হলেও H-এর sound উচ্চারিত হয় না।

উচ্চারণ:

honest → /ˈɒnɪst/

অর্থাৎ শব্দটির শুরুতে vowel sound রয়েছে।

তাই:

✅ an honest man

❌ a honest man

১১. Hour-এর আগে AN

hour-এও h silent।

তাই:

✅ an hour

❌ a hour

Example:

I waited for an hour.

১২. A University কিন্তু AN Umbrella

এখানে আসল বিষয় হলো sound।

University:

উচ্চারণ শুরু:

/juː/

তাই:

✅ a university

Umbrella:

উচ্চারণ শুরু:

/ʌ/

তাই:

✅ an umbrella

১৩. A European

European শব্দটি E দিয়ে শুরু হলেও এর pronunciation শুরু হয় /j/ sound দিয়ে।

তাই:

✅ a European

❌ an European

১৪. An MBA

এখানে আরও একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় রয়েছে।

MBA-এর উচ্চারণ সাধারণত শুরু হয়:

/em/

অর্থাৎ প্রথম sound হলো vowel sound।

তাই:

✅ an MBA student

১৫. A এবং AN – মূল নিয়ম

মনে রাখবে:

A → consonant sound-এর আগে

AN → vowel sound-এর আগে

শুধু প্রথম Letter দেখে সিদ্ধান্ত নেবে না।

🟡 DEFINITE ARTICLE – THE

১৬. THE কী?

The হলো Definite Article।

যখন আমরা কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, স্থান বা বিষয়ের কথা বলি, তখন The ব্যবহার করতে পারি।

Example:

I saw a dog. The dog was black.

প্রথমবার:

a dog

কারণ কুকুরটি তখন নতুন information।

দ্বিতীয়বার:

the dog

কারণ এখন আমরা জানি কোন dog-এর কথা বলা হচ্ছে।

১৭. প্রথমবার A/AN, পরে THE

এটি খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি pattern।

Example:

I bought a book. The book is interesting.

প্রথমে:

a book

পরে:

the book

কারণ দ্বিতীয়বার book-টি নির্দিষ্ট হয়ে গেছে।

১৮. THE দিয়ে নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু

Close the door.

এখানে বক্তা ও শ্রোতা জানে কোন দরজার কথা বলা হচ্ছে।

Please pass me the pen.

এখানেও নির্দিষ্ট pen বোঝানো হচ্ছে।

১৯. Unique Things-এর আগে THE

যে জিনিসকে সাধারণভাবে একক বা unique হিসেবে ধরা হয়, তার আগে the ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

the Sun

the Moon

the Earth

the sky

Example Sentence:

The Sun rises in the east.

২০. Superlative Degree-এর আগে THE

Superlative-এর আগে সাধারণত the ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

the best

the biggest

the tallest

the most beautiful

Sentence:

He is the best student in the class.

This is the most beautiful place I have seen.

২১. Ordinal Number-এর আগে THE

Example:

the first

the second

the third

the fourth

Sentence:

He won the first prize.

২২. Musical Instruments-এর আগে THE

সাধারণ অর্থে কোনো musical instrument বাজানোর কথা বললে the ব্যবহারের একটি প্রচলিত pattern রয়েছে।

Example:

He plays the guitar.

She plays the piano.

He can play the violin.

২৩. নদীর নামের আগে THE

অনেক নদীর নামের আগে the ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

the Ganges

the Thames

the Nile

the Brahmaputra

Sentence:

The Ganges is an important river of India.

২৪. সমুদ্র ও মহাসাগরের নামের আগে THE

Example:

the Indian Ocean

the Pacific Ocean

the Atlantic Ocean

the Arabian Sea

২৫. মরুভূমির নামের আগে THE

Example:

the Sahara Desert

the Thar Desert

২৬. পর্বতমালার নামের আগে THE

Example:

the Himalayas

the Alps

তবে একক পর্বতের নামের ক্ষেত্রে সাধারণত article ব্যবহার আলাদা হতে পারে।

Example:

Mount Everest

সাধারণভাবে:

❌ the Mount Everest

২৭. কিছু দেশের নামের সঙ্গে THE

বহু-শব্দবিশিষ্ট বা বিশেষ ধরনের কিছু দেশের নামের সঙ্গে the ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

the United States

the United Kingdom

the Netherlands

কিন্তু:

India

Japan

Nepal

সাধারণভাবে এদের আগে the বসে না।

২৮. Newspapers ও কিছু প্রতিষ্ঠানের নাম

কিছু newspaper-এর নামের সঙ্গে the ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Example:

The Times

The Guardian

তবে প্রতিটি proper name-এর আগে নিজে থেকে the বসানো যাবে না।

PART – E

🚫 কখন A/AN ব্যবহার করা যাবে না?

২৯. Plural Noun-এর আগে সাধারণ অর্থে A/AN নয়

A/An singular countable noun-এর সঙ্গে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

তাই:

❌ a books

❌ an apples

সঠিক:

✅ books

✅ apples

Example:

I like books.

She bought apples.

৩০. Uncountable Noun-এর আগে A/AN নয়

সাধারণ অর্থে:

❌ a water

❌ a milk

❌ a rice

কারণ এগুলো সাধারণত uncountable noun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

তবে পরিমাণ বোঝাতে অন্য structure ব্যবহার করা যায়।

Example:

a glass of water

a bottle of milk

a bowl of rice

৩১. Abstract Noun-এর আগে সাধারণ অর্থে Article না-ও থাকতে পারে

Example:

Honesty is important.

Love is powerful.

Knowledge is valuable.

এখানে abstract idea-কে general sense-এ বোঝানো হয়েছে।

কিন্তু নির্দিষ্ট হলে:

The love of a mother is special.

PART – F

🟢 ZERO ARTICLE

৩২. Zero Article কী?

কখনও কোনো Article ব্যবহার করা হয় না। একে Grammar-এ Zero Article বলা হয়।

Example:

Books are useful.

Water is essential for life.

Honesty is a great virtue.

এখানে কোনো Article নেই।

৩৩. ভাষার নামের আগে সাধারণত Article নেই

I speak English.

She is learning Bengali.

He knows Hindi.

সাধারণভাবে:

❌ the English — যদি English language-কে সাধারণভাবে বোঝানো হয়।

তবে বিশেষ context-এ the + adjective বা অন্য structure-এর ব্যবহার হতে পারে।

৩৪. Subject-এর নামের আগে Article নয়

সাধারণভাবে:

English is interesting.

Mathematics is difficult.

History is important.

🔵 DETERMINER

৩৫. Determiner কী?

সহজভাবে:

Determiner হলো এমন Word যা Noun-এর আগে বসে সেই Noun-এর সংখ্যা, পরিমাণ, মালিকানা, নির্দিষ্টতা বা পরিচয় সম্পর্কে তথ্য দেয়।

Determiner-এর মধ্যে রয়েছে বিভিন্ন ধরনের Word।

Example:

this book

my book

some books

many students

each student

the book

এখানে this, my, some, many, each, the Noun সম্পর্কে অতিরিক্ত information দিচ্ছে।

৩৬. Demonstrative Determiners

কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে দেখিয়ে বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়:

this

that

these

those

This

কাছের একটি:

This book is mine.

That

দূরের একটি:

That house is beautiful.

These

কাছের একাধিক:

These books are new.

Those

দূরের একাধিক:

Those students are playing.

৩৭. Possessive Determiners

মালিকানা বা possession বোঝায়।

Examples:

my

your

his

her

its

our

their

Example:

My book is new.

Your bag is here.

His car is red.

Our school is beautiful.

Their house is large.

৩৮. Quantifiers

পরিমাণ বা সংখ্যা সম্পর্কে ধারণা দেয়।

Common examples:

some

any

much

many

few

a few

little

a little

several

enough

৩৯. MANY

সাধারণত plural countable noun-এর সঙ্গে:

many students

many books

many people

Example:

Many students attended the class.

৪০. MUCH

সাধারণত uncountable noun-এর সঙ্গে:

much water

much money

much time

Example:

I don't have much time.

৪১. A FEW বনাম FEW

এটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

A few

অল্প কিছু আছে—সাধারণত positive sense।

I have a few friends.

অর্থ: আমার কয়েকজন বন্ধু আছে।

Few

খুব কম—প্রায় নেই-এর কাছাকাছি negative sense।

Few students understood the lesson.

৪২. A LITTLE বনাম LITTLE

A little

অল্প কিছু আছে।

I have a little money.

Little

খুব সামান্য আছে।

I have little money.

অর্থের পার্থক্য খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

৪৩. EACH

প্রত্যেককে আলাদা আলাদাভাবে বোঝায়।

Each student has a book.

৪৪. EVERY

প্রত্যেককে সাধারণভাবে বোঝায়।

Every student must study.

Each এবং Every-এর পরে সাধারণত singular countable noun ব্যবহৃত হয়।

A/An সাধারণত Singular Countable Noun-এর আগে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

A ও An নির্ধারণে Letter নয়, Sound গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

📚 Chapter Summary

আজকের অধ্যায়টি English Grammar-এর একটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভিত্তি।

A, An এবং The ছোট শব্দ হলেও এগুলোর ভুল ব্যবহার একটি English Sentence-কে grammatically incorrect বা unnatural করে তুলতে পারে।

সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় হলো:

A/An ব্যবহারের সময় শুধু প্রথম Letter দেখবে না—প্রথম Sound শুনবে।

তাই:

a university

কিন্তু:

an umbrella

আবার:

an honest man

কিন্তু:

a European

এছাড়া The ব্যবহার করে আমরা কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, স্থান বা পরিচিত বিষয়কে নির্দেশ করতে পারি।

আর Determiners Noun-এর আগে এসে সেই Noun-এর identity, quantity, possession, proximity বা definiteness সম্পর্কে অতিরিক্ত information দেয়।

🌿 মনে রাখুন

“A good sentence needs not only words, but also the right words in the right place.”

English Grammar শেখার সময় ছোট শব্দকে কখনো ছোট করে দেখবে না।

A, An, The—এই তিনটি শব্দের সঠিক ব্যবহার তোমার English writing-কে অনেক বেশি পরিষ্কার, স্বাভাবিক এবং grammatically accurate করে তুলবে।

প্রতিদিন অল্প করে পড়ো।

নিজের Sentence নিজে লেখো।

ভুল হলে সংশোধন করো।

কারণ Grammar মুখস্থ করার বিষয় নয়—Grammar ব্যবহার করার বিষয়।
